The Lume is Australia’s first permanent immersive digital art gallery and opened in September 2021 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. It is the first permanent installation produced by Melbourne’s very own Grande Exhibitions, known for their large scale exhibitions touring the globe.
Additionally, guests can visit The Lume worry-free as this event is a COVID-safe experience set in a huge, contactless and air-controlled open space allowing guests to easily maintain social distancing as they enjoy this multi-sensory, digital art encounter.
Lume Melbourne occupies 3000 square metres, with 150 projectors casting changing and moving images, plus music and scents matched to the artwork with finesse.
THE LUME MELBOURNE – VAN GOGH
If you are keen to completely immerse yourself in the stunning work of Van Gogh Lume is just the place. THE LUME Melbourne opened with Van Gogh on 1 September 2021.
Explore, play, dance and marvel as every surface becomes an animated canvas and masterpieces spring to life four storeys tall, providing the unique opportunity to fully experience Van Gogh’s artistry and truly immerse yourself in his world.
Be surrounded by his glorious Starry Night while indulging in the flavours of 19th century France at the Terrace Café 1888. Curated tastes, evocative aromas and a stirring choreographed soundscape weave thrilling new dimensions to this multi-sensory experience.
The gallery also includes a dedicated mirror infinity room packed with hundreds of sunflowers and a life-size recreation of Van Gogh’s bedroom for selfie enthusiasts.
The founder of Grande Exhibitions, Bruce Peterson, is a former high school teacher. Peterson wants education to be at the forefront of The Lume, with every brushstroke coming to life and a dedicated space for school groups.
The Lume will also give younger, lesser-known artists the opportunity to feature their digital works in this space.
If your kids are like mine, they want to experience art with more than just their eyes! And they find anything with an immersive digital element magical. Parents with preschool children can make the most of the 20% discounted tickets Monday to Friday with entry before 4pm. It is a pram friendly venue, ideal for a Parent’s Group because children are encouraged to explore, touch, crawl and discover.
Not just for children or families, The Lume Van Gogh experience is equally enthralling for adults, who make up a large number of visitors. The Lume exhibition also transforms into an events space in the evening, with a fully equipped commercial kitchen. There are also Yoga classes on offer in partnership with Happy Melon Studios.
